An Upgrade, Not a Product

You're Not Buying "Motorized Shades" — You're Adding Motorization

There's no single product called a motorized shade. Motorization is an operating system that replaces the lift cord or tilt wand with a quiet motor hidden in the headrail or roller tube, and it can be added to nearly everything we install — roller shades, honeycomb shades, solar shades, roman shades, wood and faux wood blinds, and shutters with a compatible tilt mechanism.

You still pick the fabric, opacity, and style you want first. Motorization is the layer you add on top, for the windows where reaching a cord or wand is inconvenient or impossible.

The First Real Decision

Battery vs. Hardwired Power

FeatureRechargeable BatteryHardwired
Best forExisting homes, retrofits — no wiring neededNew construction, remodels, oversized or bank windows
InstallationNo electrical work requiredRequires wiring during construction or remodel
MaintenancePeriodic recharging via a charging port on the headrailNone — continuous power
Power outageKeeps working, since it's self-poweredPauses until power is restored, unless on backup power

For most homes retrofitting existing windows, battery power is the simpler and less invasive choice.

Our Two Systems

BLISS Automation and Somfy Automation

We install both systems, through our supplier Alta Window Fashions. The right one depends on how much control and feedback you want.

BLISS AutomationOperated by the touch of a button, a handheld remote, a smart device, or your voice — straightforward and easy to use day to day.
Somfy AutomationUses Zigbee motors with real-time shade position and battery status feedback, controlled through the TaHoma app by Somfy — a step up for anyone who wants more detailed control and feedback.
Hands-Free

Voice Control and Smart Home Integration

Amazon Alexa"Alexa, close the living room shades."
Google Home"Hey Google, lower the office shades."
Apple SiriVoice commands from an iPhone or iPad.
App schedulingSet times for shades to open or close automatically, or group several shades to move together.
Why It's Not Just a Convenience

Cordless Safety

Traditional lift cords and tilt chains are a real strangulation risk for young children and pets. Motorization removes them entirely — no cord, no chain, nothing hanging at all.

Where It Makes the Biggest Difference

Which Windows Benefit Most

High transoms and two-story foyersWindows you physically can't reach with a wand or cord.
Wide window banksMove several shades together with one remote press instead of operating each by hand.
Windows behind furnitureBehind a soaking tub, a kitchen sink, or a deep sectional — anywhere reaching the shade is awkward.
Heavy or oversized shadesLarge fabric shades or heavy wood blinds lift smoothly with no strain on the mechanism.

Common Questions

Motorized Shades FAQ

Can motorization be added to shades or blinds I already own?

Usually not — motorization is typically built in during manufacturing. If you have an existing modular headrail or compatible mechanism, we can take a look during the in-home consultation, but in most cases motorizing means ordering a new custom shade with the motor built in.

Do I need Wi-Fi to operate motorized shades?

No. A handheld remote or wireless wall switch works over local radio signal with no internet needed. Wi-Fi is only required for app control, scheduling, or voice assistants like Alexa and Google Home.

What happens during a power outage?

Battery-powered shades keep working normally, since the power source is self-contained. Hardwired shades pause until power is restored, unless connected to a backup power system.

Are motorized shades actually safer for kids and pets?

Yes. There's no cord, chain, or loop hanging anywhere — the strangulation risk that comes with traditional lift cords is removed entirely, not just reduced.

How long does the battery last?

It depends on how often the shade is used, but the battery is designed to go a good while between charges under normal daily use. Recharging is simple — plug a charger into the port on the headrail without removing the shade from the window.

What's the difference between BLISS Automation and Somfy Automation?

BLISS is operated by button, remote, smart device, or voice — simple and direct. Somfy uses Zigbee motors with real-time position and battery feedback, controlled through the TaHoma app, which suits anyone who wants more detailed control and status information.

Can I control multiple shades at once?

Yes. A multi-channel remote, the app, or a voice command can move a single shade, a room, or every shade in the house together.

Do motorized shades work with Alexa, Google Home, and Siri?

Yes, once paired with a compatible smart home hub. Both our BLISS and Somfy systems support voice control through those platforms.

Will motorized shades lower my energy bills?

Scheduling solar or honeycomb shades to close during peak afternoon sun cuts the heat load on your air conditioning in summer, and opening them in winter lets in natural warmth. It's a real, if modest, contribution to your energy use.

How do I clean motorized shades?

A soft, dry cloth handles routine dust the same as our other shades. Avoid soaking the fabric or the motor housing.

Which windows benefit most from motorization?

High transoms, two-story foyer windows, wide banks of windows, and anything behind furniture where reaching a cord or wand is genuinely difficult.

Can shutters be motorized?

On shutters with a compatible tilt mechanism, yes — particularly useful on high transom windows. We'll confirm compatibility during the consultation.

How long does it take to get motorized shades installed?

You choose. Domestic production runs about three weeks at a higher price. Imported production runs about eight weeks and costs less.

What's the warranty?

A limited lifetime warranty covering manufacturer's defects in materials, mechanisms, and motor components, for as long as you own the product.
